Industrial Vintage

When it comes to expressing individuality through home decorating, Editor of Real Living magazine, Deb Bibby recommends channelling your creativity and creating impact by “fusing styles to keep your interior interesting.” With a focus on using vintage pieces as art, Deb discusses her contemporary, eclectic style and explores one of the key trends of the season – Industrial Vintage.

“I’d never decorate my own home with furniture from just one era – I mix it up with unusual, unexpected combinations creating visual juxtapositions to make it more fun and personal. I have always loved industrial vintage pieces because of their uniqueness. And who doesn’t enjoy the seriously addictive hunt-and-gather element of stumbling across a ‘find’. Vintage industrial items are more like artworks, and are easy to rearrange and update whenever needed – they allow you to have heaps of fun with an interior and can turn bland into super cool. One hero vintage piece can instantly transform a sterile space and give it character and an arty edge. And, the patina of vintage is glorious: soft, gentle and welcoming; conveying a lovely, relaxed vibe – nothing is overly precious or stuffy.

Vintage is also versatile. Pieces can be used for totally different purposes than intended, like the magazine rack in the image – it could be used for shoes, kids toys, kitchen pots and pans, anything! But really, it would make a killer bookstand. As I don’t have a built-in wardrobe, I just have to have the clothes rack (not shown) – it’s quirky and practical.

This style is simple, but not boring or predictable. If you get confused about what style of interior you should aim for then look at what you’re wearing and apply the same principle to your home. Your style is already innate in you and will give you the confidence, inspiration and the direction to create a hip, glamorous or industrial vintage vibe for your home – right now, virtually anything goes!”
